the sweet spot on most drivers today is smooth, in days past it was
grooved, why the change?

Mike Dalecki...
It doesn't matter. In times past people thought it provided increased
spin. The grooves do nothing. The friction with the face is more than
enough to create the necessary spin.

puttster...
How do you know this?

stultz...
on this subject.

david s-a...
Grooves on drivers do little to influence the flight of the ball, and
are mainly cosmetic.

Unfortunately, today's thin faced drivers would be vulnerable to failure
if grooves were included on the face...most drivers that I have had
fail(2 only) have cracked in the face grooves.

I'm wondering why more manufacturer's don't offer a hybrid alternative
to the gas guzzling vehicles that we currently see on the market.
