The words of Janis Joplin's "Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me a
Mercedes Benz" roll like honey through the canyons of
what is left of my mind. I would pray, daven, pilgrimage
to Mecca, or even pay for a reasonably priced digital
hydrometer (well-built, accurate, reliable, and no more
than $150). Anyone know where to find one other than in
my dreams?

Did you take a look at the hydrometer on Ebay? It's range
is between 1.01 and 1.03!

I thought I'd already done my mea culpas over that....
Sorry Dick, my brain registered pH meter, not hydrometer.

But a neat little pH meter! I may just get one for my
hydroponic tomatoes!

That's Plan B.

I'm not going to speak against them. Just make sure--if you get a
refractometer--that you have suitable range for what you want to do with
it. I have a 0-10brix one, which is great for checking runnings, examining
sugars in berries, and final gravity measurements (with compensation). I
can't collect an OG with it for medium to strong beers since the sugar
levels exceed 10 brix. The next step up looks to be 0-30 brix, which can't
be that precise.
