Hypothetical: Modern Sportsmanship

CatharticF1...
During the French GP this year Martin Brundle said something that surprised
me. Something that if generally accepted would indicate to me that
standards are indeed different.

And my question ISN'T about Schu and Alonso, it's about the principle of
whether it's OK to 'take someone out' if they have more to lose than you?

Here's the commentary that surprised me. Alonso was very nearly a lap down
to MS at the time, Schu being right behind him.

Martin Brundle: "As I expected Michael doesn't want to get anywhere near
that Renault. I have to say if Michael offers himself up with a 'Dan Dare'
move up the inside at the hairpin, Alonso's gotta turn in on him."

(laugh from James Allen.)
Martin: (seriously) "You would."
James: (laughing) "Of course, of course - why not? What else would you do?"
Martin: "He won't get anywhere near that snarling Renault."

So - for any two drivers in similar positions, is that acceptable?

forty...
Absolutely not. The FIA was right to strip Mike of 2nd place for his
dirty move, and they'd be right to strip Alonso or anyone else for
deliberately taking someone out to help their title fight.

There's a time and place for such driving. In North America it is called
'NASCAR' and on the other side of the pond it is called 'BTCC' ;-p

The Wizard...
Best to ask Schumie (The master at banging people off the track,Hill,
Villenueve etc)
He alone has made it the *new* craze without actually hating the other
driver (Senna always hated Prost but have to remember they were REAL racers
and not Cheaters in a red car favoured by the FIA)

Remember the year Schumey tried to Jaques out "Sorry, You won't do it like
that my friend" Certainly hinting he had to do the same as he did with Hill
and *ensure he road over his front suspension to take him out*
(Course those were the days Schumie lost points for his dirty technique, I
just wish for once a commentator will mention "Schumacher 7 times TAINTED
World Chumpion, Now lets count the WDC's he won fairly....errr ")

Joe...
If someone actually bothered to do it to MSC.. then it would be ok.. as it
would be a payback for years of dirty tacktics.. (adelaide '94 springs to
mind right away!)

if any other driver did it to someone other than schuey.. then it would be
very very wrong!
