Anybody here have an idea when a new iMac will see the light of day?
Some rumor sites report that it will be pretty soon, but I'm sure some
of you in here know better;)
Chris Clement...
|
Just curious. Which rumor sites?
|
Chris Clement...
|
No idea, but I would guess that it will be the same iMac but with new
processors.
|
Oxford...
|
i kinda doubt it anytime this year, apple seems to be pretty focused on
completing the intel transition, not issuing speed bumps, it certainly
could happen any day, but i'd say in january at the earliest...
hopefully they don't redesign it again, the current form factor is
pretty functional in most regards.

There wlll perhaps be the new Pro Towers before there's an upgrade to
the iMac which is already on Intel.
Tim Adams...

according to one rumor site, the Mac Pro will be released within a month.

Tim...
Why did you write a URL that includes the default port number?
Tim Adams...
|
Because at one point, a couple of years ago, that particular web site refused to
load unless it was included. As such, I added it to my bookmarks and have never

I look forward to your support of this claim of yours. I have been going to
macosrumors.com for many years and have never had that problem. What you
describe is most likely attributable to error on your part. By default any
browser will try port 80, which is what the :80 means. Oh, and people have
been referencing it without the :80 reference since at least 1997:
ago and just never corrected it.
For what it is worth, looking in web-search I find only 6 references to
"macosrumors.com:80", none of which has a single person making your claim.

Which is all the proof needed that you should get someone else to do your
searches for you Snit: see elizabots post for pointers. LOL!
Wally...

Not in the least interested in adding to your data harvest Snit!
Wally...

How can that be Tim? Snit insists that posts such as that simply cannot be
found!
Can a guy that claims to teach this stuff really be *that*.....wrong? :=)
Tim Adams...

If his name is michael glasser - YES, he indeed can be that wrong.

You're not the only one who has referenced that site in that way. Here's
at least 17 more incidences:

You assume that Tim understand what a default port number is, what it is
used for, and why it would not be needed. There is no reason to think that.
Should be interesting to see his response.

I wouldn't be too surprised by a minor speed bump soon, since Intel just
bumped Core Duo speed again. After that, who knows. The timing will

? 2.16 is still tops, no? They did lower prices across the board, tho.

They just bumped to 2.33 a couple of days ago:
|
|
probably depend on what chip series Apple decides to use in iMacs. They
could adopt Conroe, the new desktop processor (due July 23) or Merom
(due in September), the new laptop chip.
imouttahere...
|
Since both Yonah and Merom are 65nm processes and are pin-compatible, I
don't think Intel will push for maintaining two separate lines, IOW
Merom should supplant Yonah when it comes out.
I'd bet they keep the laptop architecture and move the iMacs to Merom,
not Conroe (thought I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Conroe iMacs).
ZnU...
|
It would certainly make things easier for them, in terms of cooling and
power requirements. Conroe probably will be cheaper for a given
performance level, though.
|
Whether or not they upgrade the laptops^wnotebooks with Merom first, or
make a simultaneous move (like the original rollout in Jan), is
anyone's guess.
|
Or, they could probably get by coasting on the current generation Core
Duo chips for quite a while, say until Macworld Expo in January. They're
fast enough for the iMac's target market. Though, I would guess they

|
I'l say. I'm perfectly happy with the performance of my iMac and
MacBook.
Apple's design bandwidth is apparently kinda limited, so it wouldn't
surprise me to see them stick with Yonahs through January, though Merom
is in fact pin-compatible with Yonah...
RichardK...
|
As has been proven by the bloke wot put a Merom in a Mini, to good effect.
|
ZnU...

Right, one of the neat things about being on Intel is that Apple can
bump performance periodically without having to do much work. It would
be a little odd to not take advantage of that.
|
DDR2-800 doesn't look to be that ground-shakingly faster than DDR2-667
though. I may or may not get a Conroe tower, I haven't really stressed
my new iMac yet.
|
won't do that.

Intel have just announced faster chips; iMacs have also dropped in price
(at least in the UK) - the 20" model by £100 - reflecting, I think,
cheaper CPUs from Intel (I'm sure someone posted about the Intel CPU
reductions saying "Apple would never pass this benefit on to the
customer" - which is of course why MacBooks are amongst the fastest
(GHz-wise - video is another matter) laptops in their price range, and
the iMac & Mac Mini have had a price drop...
I'd expect faster chips in iMacs for a September launch, a fairly
traditional time for these things to be announced. I'm also expecting
8Gb Nano to be announced in October looking at past patterns and
Christmas markets.
If no "large iPod", then I'd expect an 80Gb model of the current version.
I wouldn't expect a form-factor change for the iMac for a while - I
can't think of any pressing reason for it, unlike the CRT-based and
iLamp (just a bit wierd and hard to get powerful CPUs in) versions.

If I had to guess, it will probably just be the same iMac design with
the new processors.
