Just installed SuSE 10.1 Beta5 and notice that it has picked up
all the other grub Linux installs on the HD and incorporated them into
its own grub boot menu.
It detected previous Fedora4 install, Knoppix 4.0.2 DVD install,
Pro-Mepis RC4 install and successfully parsed each OS's grub
file entries into its own.
Totally amazing.

ubuntu has done that for some time now.
|
Here is a working system in the form of Open SuSE 10.1 grub installer
that automatically detected other installed OSes
and adds them to its own menu list.
I notice windwoes can't do any of that. They must be years behind
DFS...

Doesn't do that, not can't do that.
I hope you don't honestly think MS engineers are incapable of writing code
to recognize other filesystems and installed OSes.

Well therein you raise the concern that since GNU/Linux is now
a mainstream product with more than 7% of global market share,

If your nym was 82 would Linux have 82% of global market share?

and since micoshaft has a 'Linux Lab',
this giant monopoly has illegally taken on for itself
to release viral code to undermine Linux by wiping its
from hard discs of mainstream users.
Their clear motive is to suppress Linux desktop adoption
in favour of their own monopoly operating system.

Did you know you don't have to buy or install Windows? Never have. Never
will.
=?iso-8859-1?Q?Lin=F8nut?=...
|
Then how do you get Windows?
The Ghost In The Machine...
|
Through the generosity of the vendor (and a contract with
Microsoft), the OS will be preloaded onto one's system.
It's a wonderful deal. The vendor gets to pay for windows
on all of his boxes (not just the ones which actually get
Windows loaded thereonto) at a reduced rate, and you get
stuck with an OS that is "free" but very entangling.
Ain't life wonderful? ;-)
To be fair, I think the DoJ did in fact catch them at
this sort of move so they are presumably no longer wording
their contracts in exactly this fashion. At least, I for
one hope not.

Sinister Midget...

Steal it. Like DooFu$ seemingly does. Bilge indicates it's free, too,
so I'd check out the torrent sites or something.

|
Nah. I'd rather torrent the full version of "Crouching Woman/Hidden
Boner".
Sinister Midget...
|
I didn't know all of the classics were still available on torrents. I
guess I don't get around enough.

Read last Sunday's Dilbert.

GreyCloud...
|
I bet ballmer would love to get his hands on those two.
Sinister Midget...
|
True. And I'd bet he'd like to talk to them about their software theft,
too.
Oops. Did you possibly mean Blammer would "like to get his hands" on
them _because_ of software theft?
GreyCloud...
|
Probably in more than one way too.

That is an eminent anti-trust violation that SuSE, Ubuntu, Red Hat
and anyone else whose Linux operating systems have been harmed
could bring claims against micoshaft since they themselves
don't seek to harm micoshaft's operating system during their
installation procedure.
DFS...
|
Wonder why they haven't made any claims like that against MS? You should
represent them in a class-action lawsuit. And make sure when you write it
down that you capitalize the M in Micoshaft. Judges like it better.

Not incapable, but not allowed to. You can argue whether it is a
monopoly decision or a pragmatic one.
|
I agree it would be nice if they offered that option, but if it's that
important you can use a 3rd party multi-boot program.

getting to recognise other OSes installed on the machine
and so chooses to willfully and illegally damage the other OSes
installed by damaging their boot record.
DFS...

There's nothing illegal. You have to affirmatively choose to overwrite the
partition and MBR when you install Windows.
=?iso-8859-1?Q?Lin=F8nut?=...
|
It would be nice to have another choice, via some kind of "MS grub".
|
Robert Newson...
|
Where exactly is the box that says "Overwrite MBR?" with "OK" and "NO"
buttons? I don't remember ever seeing one so that I could "affirmatively
choose to overwrite the...MBR when [I] install[ed] Windwos".
I was never given the option so I have NEVER affirmatively choosen to allow
a Windwos install to overwrite the MBR.

|
I think the EU fine should be trippled to stop this company
from doing any more damage to Linux installs on PCs
since a working system exists that arguably works already.
Larry Qualig...
|
I realize that I'm splitting hairs but what you're talking about isn't
Windows or Linux. It's the boot-loader. Something that runs before a
single byte of any operating system even begins to load.
|
DFS...
|
Well, at least you got the 'arguably' part correct.
=?iso-8859-1?Q?Lin=F8nut?=...
|
I really don't get it. I'd install all my Windows work software on
Linux and do my job on that platform if I could work out the installer
problems with wine. Windows feels confining to me now.
